There’s a distinct pull to Detroit. Built on industry and powered by music, it’s a city that wears its grit like a badge of honor. But beneath the steel and soul lies something softer: a place that opens its arms to creatives, dreamers, and outsiders. For LGBTQ travelers, Detroit isn’t just rising—it’s already resonating, thanks to its authenticity and inclusive spirit.

My stay began at the AC Hotel Detroit at the Bonstelle, where old meets new in the most seamless way. Adjacent to a historic theater in Midtown, the hotel blends sleek design with rich history. By night, the AC Lounge turns into a chic yet relaxed spot where LGBTQ travelers can enjoy expertly mixed cocktails and light bites. The location couldn’t be better—close to Detroit’s top theaters and Little Caesars Arena, it’s the perfect launchpad for your Motor City adventure. The rooms at the AC Hotel Detroit are spacious and modern. My corner room came complete with luxurious linens and a beautiful view of the sunset.

Detroit’s queer roots run deep. From underground ballroom scenes in the 1980s to today’s thriving grassroots movements, the city’s LGBTQ identity is woven into its culture. Unlike cities with one defined “gayborhood,” queer life in Detroit is everywhere. You’ll find it on the dance floor at Menjo’s Complex—a historic venue where Grace Jones once graced the stage—or at Gigi’s, a community staple known for its electric drag shows.

Each June, Detroit turns up the volume for Motor City Pride. Held at Hart Plaza, it’s a vibrant celebration packed with music, performances, and community connection. But the celebration doesn’t stop there. LGBTQ organizations keep the spirit alive year-round with art shows, advocacy panels, and public events that welcome locals and visitors alike.

Organizations like the Ruth Ellis Center have been pillars of support for decades. Named after a Black lesbian trailblazer, the center offers critical services for LGBTQ youth, including housing, health care, and mental health support. Its newest addition, the 44,000-square-foot Clairmount Center, reflects the city’s ongoing investment in its queer community.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Regional LGBT Chamber of Commerce uplifts LGBTQ professionals through mentorship, networking, and resources. Their commitment to economic empowerment proves that inclusivity and entrepreneurship go hand in hand.

Just a few block away from the hotel is Detroit Shipping Company—a lively collective of eateries, art spaces, and hangouts. Whether you’re there for the beer garden, open mic nights, or Bollywood High Tea, it’s a spot that celebrates Detroit’s diversity in every sense. I loved the community feel of the space, which is welcoming from the moment you step through the door. They even organize a monthly event where local DJs can take turns spinning their favorite music.

Detroit’s story isn’t only told through its nightlife. One powerful stop was the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in nearby Dearborn. It’s more than a showcase of machines—it’s a museum of progress. Standing before the bus where Rosa Parks made history was a humbling reminder that Detroit is at the crossroads of civil rights, past and present. The museum also highlights other modes of transportation and even features an old locomotive which guests can climb into. It’s like stepping back in history.

You’ll feel that same spirit at Michigan Central Station. Once an abandoned relic, it’s been transformed into a gleaming center for tech and innovation, thanks to Ford’s vision and investment. Today, it’s a stunning symbol of Detroit’s rebirth—and yes, a top-tier photo op.

Book lovers, prepare to be amazed at John K. King Used & Rare Books. Spanning four floors and over a million titles, this former glove factory is a labyrinth of stories. From well-worn paperbacks to rare first editions, it’s the kind of place where you could lose an entire afternoon—and love every minute of it. I purchased an entire Britannica collection of books for under $300. I probably would have ended up spending more time there, but it was a beautiful day outside, so I wanted to take in the sun.

Nature and culture collide on the Detroit Riverwalk, a stunning 5½-mile path along the water. It’s one of the most scenic stretches in the city, perfect for biking, strolling, or simply soaking in skyline views and public art.

For a quick bite, head to Jose’s Tacos—a humble Midtown eatery where the flavors speak for themselves. Fresh tortillas, savory fajitas, and warm hospitality make it a local favorite, and a great spot to connect with Detroit’s diverse food scene. If you are hungry for something sweet, head over to Astoria Pastry Shop in Greektown. You will want to try everything there.

Walk off lunch with a peaceful afternoon stroll at Belle Isle Park. This 982-acre island oasis is packed with hidden gems like the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and the Belle Isle Aquarium—both steeped in history and beauty. Although the Aquarium was closed that afternoon, I did spend time wandering around the Conservatory as well as the grounds of Belle Isle.

And of course, no visit is complete without a stop at the Detroit Institute of Arts. With more than 65,000 works and a long-standing commitment to showcasing diverse voices, the DIA stands as one of the nation’s most progressive art museums. From exhibitions exploring gender and identity to pieces by renowned LGBTQ artists, it’s a reflection of Detroit’s cultural heartbeat. I’ve been to many museums around the country but the DIA exhibits one of the most extensive collections of historic works I’ve ever seen.

Dinner at Empire Kitchen & Cocktails closed out my day on a high note. The restaurant staff was stylish, the atmosphere intimate, and the food was packed with flavor. I ordered the white pizza which is something I don’t usually go for, but was blown away. The garlic béchamel, spinach, sausage, and fresh mozzarella were balanced to perfection. Enjoying a Detroit-style pizza was high on my list of experiences.

Detroit doesn’t need to impress—it just shows up, bold and unapologetic. It’s the kind of place where you can be 100% you, no filter, no fuss. For LGBTQ travelers, that vibe isn’t just cool—it’s downright empowering.

Enjoy the journey!

Nestled along the Jersey Shore, Asbury Park has undergone a stunning transformation from a once-sleepy beach town to a vibrant, inclusive cultural hub. Its rich history, eclectic boardwalk, and thriving arts scene have made it a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike. For the LGBTQ community, Asbury Park holds a special place, offering an open and welcoming environment that celebrates diversity. On a recent trip to the destination, I noticed a ton of pride flags sprinkled throughout the area, hanging from homes and in the windows of area businesses.

Asbury Park’s evolution into a LGBTQ-friendly destination has been a gradual process, deeply rooted in its artistic and progressive identity. During the mid-20th century, the town became a refuge for artists, musicians, and members of the LGBTQ community seeking a space that embraced difference and individuality. Over time, Asbury Park cultivated an atmosphere of acceptance that has continued to thrive today. The town is best known for its music scene, especially as it pertains to the Stone Pony. Opened in 1974, The Stone Pony has played a pivotal role in launching the careers of rock legends, most notably Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, as well as Jon Bon Jovi. For music lovers, a visit to The Stone Pony is a pilgrimage—a chance to experience the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll that has defined the area for decades.

The city’s LGBTQ inclusiveness is not just a side note—it is central to the town’s identity. Every year, Asbury Park hosts the “Jersey Pride” festival, one of the largest LGBTQ events in New Jersey. The parade, parties, and festivities attract thousands from across the state and beyond, providing a celebratory platform for the community.

In addition to events, Asbury Park is home to several LGBTQ-owned businesses, most notably Georgie’s bar and Paradise nightclub which offer guests dancing, drag shows, and themed events.

Furthermore, Asbury Park is home to the QSpot LGBTQ Community Center, a key resource that provides support services, advocacy, and social events for the community. The inclusivity extends beyond Pride Month; it is an integral part of the town’s culture year-round, making it a safe and welcoming environment for all.

For your stay in Asbury Park, check in to the St. Laurent Social Club, a chic, modern-day gathering spot that offers both a vibrant social scene and a stylish place to stay. Housed in a beautifully restored historic building, The St. Laurent blends contemporary design with vintage charm, creating an inviting atmosphere for guests and locals alike. The club features boutique hotel accommodations, coffee bar, full-service restaurant, and a pool area that exudes an air of laid-back luxury. The design is curated with attention to detail, reflecting the town’s artistic heritage while offering a space for relaxation and socializing. It is within walking distance of the Asbury Park boardwalk and the downtown area.

More than just a hotel, The St. Laurent Social Club has quickly become a focal point for both the local community and visitors looking to experience the town’s vibrant energy. The club’s restaurant offers seasonal, locally sourced dishes, providing a perfect spot for brunch or dinner. The combination of stylish accommodations, culinary excellence, and cultural events makes The St. Laurent Social Club a standout destination in Asbury Park’s thriving social scene.

A quirky and delightful gem in the heart of Asbury Park is Catsbury Park, a non-profit cat café that has captured the hearts of visitors and locals alike. Since opening in 2017, Catsbury Park has been a sanctuary for cat lovers, blending community, charity, and an undying love for furry friends. The café serves coffee and light snacks, but the main attraction is, of course, the cats. Visitors can meet and interact with adoptable cats. We had the chance to visit for cat bingo. The game is played in their kitten room and is so much fun, especially when the cats decide to pay you a visit.

The mission of Catsbury Park goes beyond simply providing a cute hangout spot. It operates as an adoption center, working to find permanent homes for rescue cats. They collaborate with local shelters to provide a second chance for cats in need. For animal lovers and families, a visit to Catsbury Park is both heartwarming and fun.

One of the crown jewels of Asbury Park is its famous Boardwalk, a seaside strip that combines nostalgic charm with modern attractions. Lined with shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues, the Boardwalk is a lively gathering place for beachgoers and art enthusiasts alike. Walking along the wooden planks, visitors are treated to ocean views on one side and an ever-changing landscape of art, food, and culture on the other.

The Boardwalk is more than just a beach destination; it’s a cultural experience. Local artists contribute to its colorful murals and public art installations, creating an atmosphere that reflects Asbury Park’s creative spirit. The Boardwalk is also home to unique boutique shops selling everything from handmade crafts to surf gear, making it a wonderful place to explore for those who love supporting small businesses.

Culinary delights are never far away, either. From seafood shacks to gourmet restaurants, the Boardwalk offers a wide range of dining options to suit every taste. Whether it’s enjoying fresh oysters by the water or indulging in artisanal ice cream, the food scene here is as diverse as the community itself.

No exploration of Asbury Park would be complete without a visit to Madam Marie’s Temple of Knowledge, a mystical and legendary psychic booth located on the Boardwalk. The story of Madam Marie, whose real name was Marie Castello, is deeply intertwined with Asbury Park’s history and folklore. For decades, she provided psychic readings to locals, visitors, and even celebrities, earning a reputation for her uncanny abilities.

Madam Marie even mentioned in the Bruce Springsteen song “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)”. While Marie passed away in 2008, her legacy continues. The booth is still operational, run by her descendants, who offer tarot readings and other spiritual services.

Whether you’re visiting to soak in the sun, immerse yourself in music history, adopt a cat, or get a psychic reading, Asbury Park stands as a symbol of resilience and reinvention. Its inclusive spirit and commitment to individuality make it a truly special place, inviting all to experience its magic.

Cape May

After a few days exploring Asbury Park, we drove further south to Cape May, a town at the southern tip of the Garden State, known for its Victorian architecture, pristine beaches, and rich history. But beyond its picturesque facade, Cape May offers visitors a diverse range of experiences that blend coastal relaxation with cultural and culinary exploration.

Cape May may be known for its beaches, but it’s also home to a burgeoning wine scene, and Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery is at the heart of it. Located just a short drive from the town center, this family-owned vineyard offers a delightful escape into Cape May’s countryside, where rows of grapevines stretch across acres of fertile soil.

Hawk Haven is a testament to Cape May’s microclimate, which is ideal for growing a variety of grapes. Visitors can enjoy tastings of wines that range from crisp whites like Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay to full-bodied reds like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the highlights of visiting Hawk Haven is their outdoor seating area, where guests can sip wine flights while taking in stunning views of the vineyard while listening to live music on the weekends.

If you are hungry, swing by Beach Plum Farm for some delicious farm-to-table cuisine. The working farm offers guests a variety of salads, sandwiches as well as a neighboring market which sells locally-owned products including jams, pastas and of course, wine.

A short drive away is Jersey Shore Alpacas. This small, family-run alpaca farm offers visitors the chance to meet and interact with these gentle, adorable creatures. Located in the nearby town of Green Creek, just a few miles from Cape May, Jersey Shore Alpacas provides an experience that is both educational and entertaining.

The farm offers tours by appointment, where visitors can feed and pet the alpacas, learn about their history, and discover how their luxurious fleece is transformed into products like scarves, hats, and socks. Visitors are often struck by the alpacas’ friendly and curious nature, making for great photo opportunities and memorable interactions.

Freshen up before dinner at Beach Shack, a laid-back oceanfront hotel that embodies the spirit of relaxed coastal living. Located on Beach Avenue, The Beach Shack offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and a casual, family-friendly atmosphere.

Whether you’re staying in one of their colorful, breezy rooms or just dropping by for a meal, The Beach Shack is all about beach vibes and comfort. The hotel’s iconic beachfront bar and restaurant, The Rusty Nail, is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Known for its eclectic menu, live music, and bonfires, The Rusty Nail captures the essence of a perfect beach day—complete with sand, surf, and seafood.

The outdoor seating area, complete with fire pits and picnic tables, is the ideal spot to unwind after a day on the beach. Menu favorites include fresh fish tacos, clam chowder, and their famous BBQ ribs, all of which can be enjoyed with a cold beer or tropical cocktail. Kids and pets are welcome, making The Beach Shack a go-to destination for families.

For those seeking an authentic Italian dining experience in Cape May, Iccara Italian Bistro delivers a culinary journey that feels like a trip to Italy. Located just off Washington Street, Iccara offers a cozy, elegant dining atmosphere paired with a menu that highlights the best of Italian cuisine, often with a fresh, local twist.

The restaurant prides itself on using locally sourced seafood and produce, creating dishes that are both traditional and innovative. Guests can indulge in classics like homemade pasta, risotto, and seafood dishes, all prepared with the finest ingredients. We ordered a variety of dishes including the risotto special, crab stuffed mushrooms and the seafood combination. All the selections were prepared to perfection and the portions are quite large, so come hungry.

Cape May’s unique blend of history, natural beauty, and modern attractions makes it a favorite among visitors seeking both relaxation and adventure. Cape May remains one of New Jersey’s most cherished seaside escapes, so whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or an extended stay, the destination offers countless ways to create lasting memories.

Panama City, the vibrant capital of Panama, is a city where history meets modernity, and nature intertwines with urban life. This bustling metropolis offers an array of experiences, from exploring historic districts to marveling at engineering marvels and savoring world-renowned coffee. Among its many attractions, Casco Antiguo, the Bio Museo, the Panama Canal, and Geisha coffee stand out as must-see highlights.

Casco Antiguo, also known as Casco Viejo or San Felipe, is the historic district of Panama City. Founded in 1673, it replaced the original Panama City (Panama Viejo) which was destroyed by pirates. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a testament to the city’s colonial past, with its narrow cobblestone streets, colorful Spanish colonial buildings, and impressive churches.

Walking through Casco Antiguo feels like stepping back in time. The architecture is a blend of Spanish, French, and early American styles, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped Panama over the centuries. Key landmarks include the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Church of San José with its famous golden altar, and the Plaza de Francia, which honors the French builders of the Panama Canal.

Beyond its historical significance, Casco Antiguo is a cultural hub, brimming with art galleries, museums, boutiques, and vibrant nightlife. The area comes alive in the evenings, with rooftop bars offering stunning views of the modern city skyline and the Pacific Ocean. Whether you’re sipping cocktails at a trendy bar or dining at a gourmet restaurant, the ambiance in Casco Antiguo is unmatched. This is also hub of LGBTQ activities in Panama as well as the home to Panama City Pride.

Panama’s pride festival has grown tremendously in the past few years. I had the chance to walk in the parade which snakes around Casco Antiguo. As we walked along the stone streets of the parade route, it was hard not to get emotional, seeing thousands of people waving, smiling and reveling in the community.

After a long day of Pride events, check in to the beautiful JW Marriott Panama, a beacon of luxury and elegance, nestled in the vibrant Punta Pacifica neighborhood. This iconic hotel offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the city skyline, providing guests with an unforgettable experience of comfort and sophistication.

Strategically located near the bustling financial district and major attractions, the JW Marriott Panama is an ideal choice for both business and leisure travelers. Its proximity to Tocumen International Airport, just a 20-minute drive away, ensures convenient access for international guests. The property features over 300 elegantly appointed rooms and suites, each designed with contemporary decor and modern amenities. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer panoramic views, while plush bedding, spacious bathrooms, and high-speed internet ensure a comfortable stay. The hotel’s suites provide additional luxuries, such as separate living areas, private balconies, and access to the exclusive Executive Lounge.

Guests can indulge in a variety of dining options at the JW Marriott Panama. The hotel features multiple restaurants and bars, offering everything from gourmet international cuisine to local Panamanian flavors. Dining options include a poolside restaurant with breathtaking views, a chic lounge for casual gatherings, and an elegant restaurant for fine dining.

The JW Marriott Panama also offers an array of amenities designed to enhance the guest experience. A state-of-the-art fitness center, an outdoor infinity pool, and a luxurious spa provide ample opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, head to the Bio Museo, a striking structure designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Its colorful, angular design symbolizes the vibrant biodiversity of Panama. Opened in 2014, the museum aims to educate visitors about the natural history of Panama and its crucial role in the Earth’s biodiversity.

Inside, the Bio Museo features eight galleries that tell the story of Panama’s natural wonders. The exhibits highlight the country’s unique position as a land bridge that has facilitated the migration of species between North and South America. Visitors can explore interactive displays, life-sized models, and multimedia presentations that highlight Panama’s rich flora and fauna.

One of the museum’s highlights is the Gallery of Biodiversity, which emphasizes the importance of conserving Panama’s natural habitats. The Bio Museo also offers stunning views of the Panama City skyline and the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal, making it a perfect spot for both education and relaxation.

Not too far away is The Panama Canal, one of the most significant engineering feats in history. Completed in 1914, this 50-mile-long canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, revolutionizing global trade routes. The construction of the canal was a monumental task that involved overcoming numerous challenges, including disease, difficult terrain, and political complexities.

Today, the Panama Canal remains a vital artery of international maritime trade and a major tourist attraction. Visitors can learn about its history and operation at the Miraflores Visitor Center, which offers an up-close view of the massive locks in action. Watching a ship navigate through the locks is a fascinating experience, showcasing the precision and scale of this engineering marvel.

The Panama Canal Expansion, completed in 2016, added a new set of locks to accommodate larger vessels, further enhancing its capacity and global significance. The visitor center provides interactive exhibits, a theater, and observation decks, making it a comprehensive educational experience.

Coffee enthusiasts should try to experience a Geisha Coffee tasting. Panama is home to some of the world’s finest coffee, and Geisha coffee stands at the pinnacle of this reputation. Originally from Ethiopia, Geisha coffee found a new home in Panama’s highlands, particularly in the Boquete region. The unique climate and volcanic soil of this area provide ideal conditions for growing this exceptional coffee variety.

Geisha coffee is renowned for its complex flavor profile, which includes floral, fruity, and spicy notes. It has gained international acclaim, consistently winning top prizes at coffee competitions and fetching record-breaking prices at auctions. Coffee aficionados from around the world seek out this premium coffee for its unparalleled quality.

Visitors to Panama can experience Geisha coffee through tours of coffee farms in the Boquete region or at select locations in the city. These tours offer insights into the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of this gourmet coffee. Tasting sessions allow visitors to savor the unique flavors and aromas that make Geisha coffee a true delicacy.
Panama City is a destination that offers a rich tapestry of experiences, from its historic charm and cultural vibrancy to its natural wonders and culinary delights. Exploring Casco Antiguo provides a glimpse into the city’s colonial past, while the Bio Museo celebrates its biodiversity. The Panama Canal stands as a testament to human ingenuity, and Geisha coffee showcases the country’s agricultural excellence.

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or a coffee enthusiast, Panama City has something to offer. Its unique blend of old and new, nature and technology, makes it a captivating destination that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.

Enjoy the Journey!

Bordering California and Nevada is the iconic town of South Lake Tahoe. The destination seamlessly blends natural splendor with vibrant urban life. Surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada, this charming city is a year-round haven for outdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and those looking for a retreat into nature’s embrace.

Lake Tahoe enjoys a prime location on the shores of the largest alpine lake in North America. The city is surrounded by towering mountain peaks creating a stunning backdrop for every activity and adding an extra layer of allure to the area. The lake itself, with its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking panoramas, serves as the centerpiece of the region’s natural beauty, making it a great destination to visit year-round.

Boasting a plethora of outdoor activities during the warmer months, the lake becomes a playground for water sports enthusiasts, offering opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skiing, and sailing. Miles of hiking and biking trails wind through the surrounding mountains, providing stunning views of the lake and the surrounding wilderness.

Come winter, the city transforms into a winter wonderland, attracting skiers and snowboarders to its world-class ski resorts. The city is in close proximity to popular resorts like Heavenly Mountain Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe, providing access to pristine slopes and top-notch amenities. The crisp mountain air, snow-covered landscapes, and vibrant après-ski scene make Lake Tahoe a premier destination for winter sports enthusiasts.

Beyond its natural wonders, Lake Tahoe offers a vibrant entertainment and nightlife scene. The city is home to numerous restaurants, bars, and cafes catering to a variety of tastes. The bustling Heavenly Village is a hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment, featuring a range of boutiques, art galleries, and live entertainment venues. One of my favorite venues in Heavenly Village is The Loft, a combination of a restaurant and theater featuring upscale tapas and fabulous cocktails.

On my visit to The Loft, I enjoyed the Ahi Tuna ceviche which was complimented with mango and avocado ceviche as well as the Roasted Tomato Bisque with lump crabmeat. I try to eat healthy when I travel, but I couldn’t resist the White Chocolate bread pudding. I hiked earlier in the day, so I wasn’t that worried about the calories. After dinner, I caught the magic show by Chipper Lowell. With an unusual blend of stand-up, improvisation, and magic, Chipper has twice been honored with the Merlin award for “Comedy Magician of the Year” by the International Magicians Society. He was also named as one of the “Top Funniest Magicians” performing today by Magic Magazine.

For those feeling lucky, the famed casinos on the Nevada side of the border add a touch of excitement to the Lake Tahoe experience. Try your hand at the tables or enjoy a show, making for a lively evening in town. If gambling isn’t your thing, head to Flatstick Pub for indoor mini-golf and drinks.

Lake Tahoe also boasts cultural and historical attractions that provide insight into the area’s rich past. The Tallac Historic Site offers a glimpse into the region’s pioneer days, with well-preserved estates and museums showcasing the history of the destination. The area’s Native American heritage is celebrated at the Valhalla Tahoe Heritage and Arts Center.

The region places a strong emphasis on environmental conservation and sustainable tourism. Efforts to protect the lake’s clarity and preserve its natural beauty involve community initiatives, responsible development practices, and ongoing partnerships between local businesses and environmental organizations such as the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Council, a lake-wide collaborative effort to protect the lake.

I stayed at two different properties during my visit. The first is Coachman Hotel, which is located within blocks of Heavenly Village. The multi-building property was originally built in 1960 as two separate motels but was combined in the 1980’s. The hotel offers comfortable rooms, complimentary Stumptown coffee and nightly s’mores if your heart desires. The property features a fitness center, pool, hot tub, multiple fire pits and occasionally you may spot a ‘friendly’ black bear. I happened to cross paths with her on the first night of my stay. It was quite dark, and I couldn’t tell if the figure I was seeing was a statue…until it started walking. She walked past me and once my heart started beating again, I slowly made my way to the lobby. Only in Lake Tahoe!

The is a chance of spotting a black bear during your trip to Lake Tahoe. If you do, it is best to keep your distance. Visitors should not approach the bears nor feed them. For more information on what you should do if you encounter a bear, visit Bear League’s website.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, I woke up early the next morning and headed to the lobby for breakfast. The reception desk doubles as a bar where guests can enjoy breakfast in the morning and cocktails later in the day, unless you’d like a mimosa with breakfast. I decided to try the overnight oats with berries. It was so good, I had it on both mornings of my stay at Coachman Hotel. After my healthy breakfast, I had some time to kill, so I took a leisurely walk to Lakeside Beach where I got my first glimpse of the glistening lake.

If you’re looking to keep up with your yoga practice, head to Bliss Experiences and take one of their Sustainable Stability classes. It was exactly what I needed to work out all the stiffness from traveling the day before. During the warmer months, Bliss offers a variety of outdoor yoga experiences, including paddle yoga and beach yoga. I also had the chance to have an oracle reading, which turned out to be fairly accurate and echoed what a psychic told me the following day.

For lunch, head to Sidellis, an LGBTQ-owned restaurant/bar which serves a great selection of pub fare including a delicious French Dip. The owner was slinging drinks on the day I visited and told me about his vision for the establishment. Sidellis offers diners a selection of Barrel Aged beers, seasonal beers as well as ciders.

If you have time, hop on the Sunset Champagne Cruise to Emerald Bay organized by Tahoe Cruises. The two-hour voyage takes guests to picturesque Emerald Bay which is one of the most photographed locations in Lake Tahoe. You’ll come up close to Vikingsholm mansion which was built in 1928 by Lora Knight and is considered one of the grandest homes in the region. Knight built the Scandinavian-inspired home because Emerald Bay reminded her of the fjords of Norway. Be sure to bring a jacket as the temperature drops dramatically as the sun goes down. Luckily, there is a full bar offering a variety of beverages including hot cider and spiked hot chocolate if you decide not to drink the endless champagne.

I spent the last night of my stay at Black Bear Lodge, a beautiful property surrounded by mature trees and a picturesque setting. It is a bit further from the hustle and bustle, but there are still a variety of restaurants within walking distance.

My room at Black Bear Lodge came complete with a gas fireplace, comfortable sitting area, and essential oil diffuser, perfect for a relaxing evening. Guests can also gather at the quaint wine bar located just off the lobby or grab a glass of wine and mingle with other guests in the hot tub.

Getting to and from Lake Tahoe is quite simple. Most people fly into Reno-Tahoe airport and jump on the South Tahoe shuttle which takes a little over an hour. Once in town, the Lake Link is a free shuttle service which guests can use. All you need to do is download the app. Lake Link is a very convenient service and a great substitute for Uber if you are looking to save money but be sure to schedule your trip about 30-minutes in advance. I found that to be the average wait time.

The late fall season was the perfect time to visit. It was busy but not overly crowded and the weather was absolutely perfect. Cool mornings gave way to comfortable afternoons when you only needed a light sweater. The evenings were a bit chilly, but nothing too extreme.

Whether you seek adventure on the slopes, relaxation by the lake, or a taste of the local culture, South Lake Tahoe has something for everyone. This captivating destination invites visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while enjoying the warmth and hospitality of a mountain town that truly has it all. Click here for more information.

Enjoy the Journey!

Nestled along the pristine shores of Fort Lauderdale, the Pelican Grand Beach Resort stands as a beacon of luxury and relaxation. This exquisite resort, with its timeless charm and breathtaking oceanfront views, has become a haven for travelers seeking an unforgettable escape.

The Pelican Grand is a beachfront retreat that seamlessly blends old-world elegance with modern comforts. Located on the famous A1A Highway, the resort’s prime location offers guests direct access to the golden sands of the Atlantic Ocean. The moment you step into the grand lobby, you are greeted by a sense of opulence that sets the tone for your stay.

The resort boasts a range of accommodation options, from well-appointed guest rooms to spacious suites, each designed with meticulous attention to detail. The rooms are adorned with coastal-inspired decor, creating a serene ambiance that complements the natural beauty just outside the window. Private balconies provide panoramic views of the ocean, allowing guests to soak in the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets that define the Fort Lauderdale experience.

One of the standout features of the Pelican Grand is its exceptional dining options. Ocean2000, the resort’s signature restaurant, offers a culinary journey that showcases the freshest seafood and locally sourced ingredients. Guests can savor their meals while enjoying the soothing sound of waves and the gentle ocean breeze. I visited the restaurant for breakfast and dinner during my stay.

The food at Ocean2000 is top-notch. Breakfast items include a variety of elevated benedict options as well as more traditional selections including avocado toast, steel-cut oatmeal, and a fun spin on huevos rancheros.

For dinner, my partner and I began our meal with the Ahi Tuna Tartare as well as a Crab & Lobster cake. Both items were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The tuna especially was so fresh and was accompanied by a citrus-ginger soy sauce with house-made potato chips. The entrees were just as special. The Seafood Risotto was creamy and perfectly cooked, served with lobster, scallops, and shrimp. It is a bit heavy so I would recommend sharing this dish with a guest. The Cedar Plank Salmon was a favorite, served with a Vermont maple syrup-soy glaze, stir-fried grains, sweet peas, and corn.

For those seeking relaxation, the Pelican Grand offers a full-service spa where guests can indulge in a range of rejuvenating treatments. The oceanfront pool provides a refreshing oasis, surrounded by lush landscaping and comfortable loungers. Fitness enthusiasts can maintain their workout routine at the resort’s state-of-the-art fitness center, ensuring a well-rounded experience for all guests.

Beyond the confines of the resort, guests can explore the vibrant city of Fort Lauderdale. The Pelican Grand’s strategic location allows easy access to popular attractions such as boutiques and art galleries on Las Olas Boulevard and the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens

This enchanting estate, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, beckons visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in the unique legacy of its former owners, artist Frederic Clay Bartlett and his wife Evelyn Fortune Bartlett. The Bonnet House, built in 1920, is a charming plantation-style home that served as the winter retreat for the Bartletts. Its design reflects a mix of Caribbean, plantation, and Art Deco influences, creating a visually captivating structure. The house’s name is derived from the bonnet lily, which flourishes in the estate’s lush gardens.

Frederic Clay Bartlett, an accomplished artist, used the Bonnet House as his creative sanctuary. Today, visitors can explore the house’s interior and marvel at the impressive collection of Bartlett’s artworks, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures. The house itself is a canvas, adorned with vibrant colors and intricate details that highlight the artist’s unique vision.

The Bonnet House also boasts an extensive collection of decorative arts and personal artifacts belonging to the Bartletts.
If you prefer a more physical adventure, book a tour with Sunrise Paddleboards. Our knowledgeable and friendly guide led us on a two-hour tour of Wilton Manors, snaking us through mangroves on the Middle River. Although we chose to kayak, the company offers paddleboards as well as private lessons for those who may not have tried paddleboarding. It is a fun alternative to kayaking and a great core workout.

After your tour, head to The House on the River for a wonderful riverside dinner. Start your meal with an order of Crispy Brussels Sprouts prepared with avocado honey and balsamic. This was one of my favorite takes on Brussels sprouts I have ever had. Needless to say, the plate was wiped clean. For our entrees, we ordered the Snapper Filet and Shrimp & Crab Squid Ink Tagliatelle. Both items were prepared beautifully, although I did favor the snapper over the pasta. The House on the River is located just off downtown Fort Lauderdale’s famed Las Olas Boulevard and within walking distance of the Broward Performing Arts Center, so it is the perfect place to catch dinner before a show.

Fort Lauderdale never disappoints. The destination offers something for everyone. Whether you are looking for some fun in the sun or reveling in LGBTQ nightlife in nearby Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale has it all.

In 1987, I visited the island of Hawai‘i for the very first time. My mother and I decided to join other family members on the vacation of a lifetime. Hawai’i had always been my mother’s dream vacation, so she was eager to go. Being seven years old at the time, I don’t remember much about that trip with a few exceptions. One notably was having to wrap a hula skirt around my neck because I was too short for it to go around my waist.

36 years later, I finally had the opportunity to travel back to the island of Hawai‘i. This time, I asked my boyfriend Dylan if he would like to join. As a travel journalist, I get to experience so many wonderful things but often I don’t have anyone to share them with, so I was excited to share these moments with someone. It was Dylan’s first time visiting the island of Hawai‘i and his longest trip to date.

A bit tired from traveling nearly 12 hours, we began our journey in Kailua-Kona at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Resort. The beachfront property is centrally located to almost all of Kona’s beautiful attractions and was also home to the annual Kona Pride festival, which was headlined this year by RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Anetra and Jessica Wild.

After a quick power nap, we headed out for our first excursion, an evening swim with manta rays organized by Anelakai Adventures. A small group of 8 of us paddled about 10 minutes off the coast to an area known for its abundance of manta rays. Although sightings aren’t guaranteed, the team had heard the chances of seeing some rays were pretty good that day. Sure enough, as we anchored down and jumped into the warm Hawai‘i water, we looked down and saw over half a dozen manta rays swimming under our boat. For nearly an hour, we watched these gentle giants play in the water. What I enjoyed most about this tour was the fact that we had to paddle to the site rather than take a motorized boat, adding to the authentic experience. This will definitely go on my top 10 list of most memorable experiences.

The next morning, we woke up early and drove to Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site. Pu‘ukohola Heiau NHS is open all year round and shares the history of the beginning stages of the Hawaiian Kingdom. A socio-political hierarchy, deeply rooted in spiritual beliefs developed in Hawai‘i. This rigidly ordered class system gave power to a small number of ali‘i nui (high chiefs) who controlled different parts of an island, a whole island, or several islands. Alliances through bloodlines and marriage further complicated and enhanced the relationships among rival chiefs. The site became a National Historic Site on August 17, 1972.

Back at the hotel, Kona Pride was in full swing. Dozens of vendors lined the lū‘au grounds of our hotel, while entertainers performed on the main stage to a crowd of thousands. Although Kona Pride isn’t one of the largest pride events I’ve attended, the setting is the most unique. Where else can you celebrate LGBTQ culture while standing on sacred grounds adjacent to the ocean? In addition to the festival itself, Kona Pride offers festivalgoers a variety of activities throughout the weekend including Pride Yoga, Drag Brunch, Tea Dance, and a Pride Pool Party.

If you are looking for a more relaxing experience, rent a kayak from Kona Boys and paddle around the ocean for a few hours. The company offers standard kayak rentals, guided tours, paddle boards, snorkeling equipment as well as surfboards if you are more adventurous.

To get a glimpse into Hawaiian (and Polynesian) cultures, I recommend getting tickets to the Island Breeze Lūʻau. It is also conveniently located on the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Resort grounds. The lū‘au begins with the Royal Court arriving on stage and mo’ʻolelo storytelling. Guests can feast on a variety of cuisine ranging from locally caught fish and poke to kālua pork. The court will teach guests the art of hula dancing before they begin their ceremonial dances from different parts of the world. The dinner culminates in a breathtaking traditional fire dance.

Of course, one can’t visit the island of Hawai‘i without tasting some of their world-renowned coffee. We visited Ueshima Coffee Company where we were able to roast our own beans and create a unique coffee as well as learn the process creating the perfect roast. Big Island Coffee Roasters in Hilo offered us a wonderful 11-course coffee tasting of a wide variety of beverages including a delicious affogato that almost tasted like a creamsicle.

At Kona Pride, we met a local gay couple who owned a farm not too far from our hotel, so we decided to visit Tony and Louie the following afternoon. They graciously welcomed us into their home and toured us around their farm, where they not only grow coffee, but a variety of fruit as well as cacao.

On the way to Hilo, we visited Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The entry fee to the park is a bit steep at $30, but it gives you access for a few days so be sure to keep your receipt. The park encompasses the summits of two of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Maunaloa – and is a designated International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For the next few hours, we explored Kīlauea, hiking around the edge of the volcano which had been erupting a few days prior to our visit. For dinner that evening, we dined at The Rim, a wonderful restaurant overlooking the volcano. We shared a few appetizers including lobster crab cakes, edamame, and a tuna poke stack. Everything was delicious and the service was wonderful. I would definitely come back to this restaurant on my next visit.

For the next stop on our Hawai‘i holiday, we drove to Hilo, located on the island’s east coast. After checking in to SCP Hilo, we drove to the downtown area which contains dozens of quaint boutiques and restaurants. It was here that we had more encounters with the locals and embraced their ‘ohana (family) mentality. Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming to the point where Dylan and I were ready to relocate to Hilo. The Hilo Airport offers inter-island flights to Honolulu International Airport so travel to and from the city is pretty simple.

Hilo contains a few black sand beaches that are free and accessible to the public. As relaxing as Kona was, Hilo has an even more relaxed and holistic vibe. I felt like I was among the locals more so than in Kona.

The next morning we drove a few minutes to Wailuku River State Park, home to Waiānuenue (Rainbow) Falls, an 80 foot waterfall located just a few minutes outside of downtown Hilo. It was crazy to see a natural wonder located that close to the city. During our visit, we were just 2 of 3 people at the site. We passed a few more people on the trail leading to the top of the falls, but it was great to visit without any crowds. We then stopped by Ken’s House of Pancakes for breakfast. The prices seemed a bit high at first, so we decided to split an omelet which came with a side of their famous pancakes. Luckily, we only ordered one item as the omelet was the largest I’ve ever seen. It was overflowing with a variety of vegetables and the pancakes came with three types of syrup: coconut, guava, and passion fruit. It was well worth the extra calories.

As we drove back to Kona, I thought about all the experiences we had on the trip. One Hawai‘i experience that we had not seen yet was their picture-perfect postcard sunset. The sky that afternoon was pretty clear, and I thought to myself today will be the today and sure enough, it was. We pulled over to an overlook about 15-minutes north of Kona to a westward facing field of black volcanic rock that ran into the ocean and spent the next hour watching the sun sink over the horizon. It was the memory I was hoping to achieve before our departure from paradise.

Enjoy the Journey!

A short 20-minute MARTA ride from downtown Atlanta, Brookhaven stands as a testament to the perfect blend of history, modernity, and community. As a city that has grown from a small farming community to a thriving urban hub, Brookhaven offers its residents and visitors a unique experience with its tree-lined streets, diverse neighborhoods, and an array of cultural and recreational opportunities.

Founded in 1910, Brookhaven’s origins can be traced back to a dairy farm owned by Samuel Ernest Briarcliff. The city was named after the Brookhaven Country Club, which itself took its name from a town in Mississippi. Initially, Brookhaven served as a summer retreat for Atlanta’s elite, thanks to its lush landscapes and easy access to the city. Historic Brookhaven, the neighborhood, was established in 1910. The City of Brookhaven was then incorporated in 2012.

For my stay, I chose the Hyatt Regency Atlanta Perimeter, which is centrally located to all of Brookhaven’s restaurants and attractions. The beautiful property features a large outdoor swimming pool, walking trail, fitness center, and multiple dining options including their fine dining restaurant Villa Christina as well as The Barrel Room, which serves specialty cocktails. Villa Christina Market is a great choice for a quick breakfast or if you prefer, the hotel also offers a metropolitan breakfast for those looking for a heartier meal.

One of Brookhaven’s standout features is its cultural diversity. The city boasts a rich mix of ethnicities, making it a melting pot of cultures, traditions, and cuisines. The Buford Highway corridor is a testament to this diversity, hosting a wide array of international restaurants, markets, and shops. From Vietnamese pho to authentic Mexican tacos and everything in between, food enthusiasts are in for a treat in this gastronomic wonderland.

If you are looking for an LGBTQ-focused dining option, head to Lips for their fabulous drag dinner show. Guests enter an ornate room complete with disco balls, glitter, and lots of sparkle. The menu consists of everything from shrimp and grits or seared salmon to mouth-watering hamburgers. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical about the quality of food we would receive as many of these style shows are not known for their cuisine, but everything was absolutely delicious. My salmon was cooked to perfection and accompanied by a sweet mango salsa which complemented the fish perfectly.

The show consisted of about a dozen performances by the Atlanta area’s best-known drag queens including Brigitte Bidet, Taejah Thomas, and Gigi Diamond. The capacity crowd celebrated as the queens werked their magic while serving double duty as hostesses and performers. If you are visiting Brookhaven during the week, swing by Lips on Wednesday evening for Bitchy Bingo.

Brookhaven takes pride in its commitment to green spaces and recreational facilities. The city’s parks offer a variety of amenities for residents to enjoy, from walking trails and playgrounds to sports fields and picnic areas. Murphey Candler Park, a 135-acre oasis surrounding a lake, is a favorite among families and outdoor enthusiasts.

For those seeking cultural experiences, Brookhaven delivers a range of artistic and entertainment options. The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, located on the campus of Oglethorpe University, showcases a diverse collection of artworks from around the world. The curator of the museum gave us a wonderful tour of the space, which houses works ranging from contemporary masters to current artists including Yehimi Cambrón, whose exhibition “Documenting the Undocumented in the South” is now on display.

The artist explains the exhibition “expresses the nuances of family togetherness, the sense of home found in the arms of immigrant mothers, the heartbreak of anti-immigrant violence, the transformative fire of resistance against oppression, and the kindled warmth of communities who survive and thrive together — a swarm that knows its collective power.”

Brookhaven is home to a variety of public and private educational institutions, serving students from preschool to higher education. Oglethorpe University, a liberal arts college, has a rich history and plays a significant role in the local educational landscape.

Founded in 1835, the university has continually evolved while maintaining a steadfast commitment to providing students with a transformative education. The picturesque campus, which is reminiscent of an Ivy League university, boasts a harmonious blend of traditional architecture and modern facilities, creating an inspiring environment for learning and growth. Oglethorpe’s faculty, comprised of distinguished scholars and dedicated mentors, fosters a dynamic and engaging learning atmosphere that empowers students to question, innovate, and excel. Beyond academics, the university encourages holistic development, offering a myriad of extracurricular activities, cultural events, and service opportunities that shape well-rounded individuals poised to make meaningful contributions to society.

After touring the property, head to Haven Restaurant and Bar for a delicious brunch. Try the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake “Benny” which is prepared with baby kale salad, cherry tomatoes, radish, soft poached eggs, and sauce bearnaise or if you want something on the lighter side, order the Dresden Cobb, a salad made with mixed lettuces, cherry tomatoes, haricots verts, smoked bacon, farm egg, avocado, feta, and served with a red wine vinaigrette. If you are really hungry, I recommend The Big Nasty, a buttermilk fried chicken sandwich, scrambled egg, tillamook cheddar, and smoked bacon served on a soft bun with a smattering of Haven’s secret sauce.

Perhaps one of Brookhaven’s most cherished attributes is its strong sense of community. The city encourages civic engagement through various programs and initiatives, fostering connections among residents. The Brookhaven Farmers Market, for instance, brings together local producers and consumers, promoting sustainable practices and a stronger bond among neighbors. The city hosts various cultural events throughout the year, including festivals, concerts, and art exhibitions, fostering a sense of community engagement and creativity.

Brookhaven encapsulates the essence of a vibrant and evolving urban community. From its humble beginnings as a farming area to its status as a modern city with a diverse population, Brookhaven’s charm lies in its ability to seamlessly blend history, culture, and progress. With its thriving cultural scene, green spaces, educational institutions, and strong community bonds, Brookhaven stands as a testament to the potential for growth while maintaining a unique sense of identity.

Visit Explore Brookhaven for more information.

Enjoy the Journey!

Columbus, Ohio, a city known for its friendly and diverse atmosphere, has emerged as a thriving hub for LGBTQ culture in the Midwest. This vibrant community has grown exponentially in recent years, drawing people from all walks of life to experience its inclusivity, acceptance, and celebration of diversity. In this article, we delve into the rich LGBTQ culture in Columbus, exploring its history, events, organizations, and the city’s ongoing efforts to create a welcoming environment for all.

Columbus has a long history of supporting LGBTQ rights and fostering an accepting environment. The city’s Pride Parade, established in 1981, is one of the oldest in the Midwest. This annual event brings together thousands of LGBTQ individuals, allies, and supporters to celebrate and advocate for equal rights, visibility, and social acceptance.

Additionally, Columbus has a thriving LGBTQ neighborhood, known as the Short North. This eclectic and artsy area is home to numerous LGBTQ-friendly bars, restaurants, galleries, and shops. The Short North is not only a place to socialize and enjoy nightlife, but also a symbol of the city’s commitment to LGBTQ inclusion and representation. From popular bars like Union Cafe and Axis Nightclub to LGBTQ-owned cafes and art galleries, this neighborhood offers a safe environment for community members to express themselves authentically. The Columbus LGBTQ Community Center, known as “The Center on High,” is a vital resource for the community. It serves as a gathering place for meetings, support groups, educational workshops, and social events, fostering connections and a sense of belonging.

Although the Short North is definitely the city’s most vibrant area, I urge you to check out the Franklinton neighborhood, just a short drive away. The area is home to new shops, restaurants, the Center of Science and Industry, or COSI for short, as well as The Junto, a new independent lifestyle hotel where I stayed for the weekend.

The Junto serves up a very trendy but comfortable vibe in a part of Columbus that is quickly emerging as one of the most sought-after addresses in the city. Aside from the hotel, new apartments and condos are popping up throughout the neighborhood.

The rooms at the hotel feature luxury linens, a separate living room space as well as a super-sized bathroom with a soaking tub in the shower area. Yes, you read that correctly. It was a massive space large enough to fit about a dozen people.

One of the highlights of the hotel is Maudine’s, a lovely café named after a cow. Maudine wasn’t just any cow. She was named Ohio State Homecoming Queen back in 1926. Maudine’s makes its own syrups for their beverages, and you can clearly taste the difference. I ordered a vanilla latte, and it was probably one of the best I’ve ever had. You can clearly taste the difference between Maudine’s version verse the chain store version.

Another highlight of the pet-friendly property is the Gear Garage where guests can rent anything from bikes or kayaks to vintage Polaroid cameras.

After checking into the hotel, my boyfriend and I decided to explore the Franklinton neighborhood. A short walk away is The Bee Collective. The owner Luke was gracious enough to give us a tour of the property and show us the inner workings of the extensive hives, some of which contain thousands of bees. We even got a chance to taste some local honey, which beats out the store-bought variety any day.

A few blocks away from The Bee Collective is Makers Social, a gathering space where visitors can create a variety of leather products all while indulging in delicious cocktails, or in our case, mocktails. I made a beautiful leather-bound journal while my guest decided to create a wallet. And don’t worry, all of the projects come with detailed instructions and the friendly staff will also be more than happy to assist if you get stuck. The business was founded by Megan Pando in 2020 and serves as one of the key gathering spaces for the Franklinton community.

Next, check out a new fashion district called Common Thread, located in downtown Columbus, home to local designers and boutiques including Gerardo Encinas, Xantha, and Alex Vinash.

For dinner, head to Speck, a modern Italian eatery located downtown. We decided to start with an order of the Blistered Shishitos, which were served with parmesan, malden sea salt, and a lemon aioli as well as the Mussels special prepared in a delicious white wine broth. For our entrée, we shared the Fungi pasta, which consisted of a variety of sauteed mushrooms served over pasta in a delicate cream sauce.

Every time I visit Columbus, I have a good time, but if you happen to visit in June, check out the Stonewall Columbus Pride Festival and Parade. Held every June, in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots of 1969, this festival showcases the vibrancy, resilience, and unity of the LGBTQ community. Participants enjoy live performances, food vendors, workshops, and a powerful parade that brings together people from all backgrounds to march for equality and justice.

Numerous organizations in Columbus are dedicated to providing support, resources, and advocacy for LGBTQ individuals. Among these, Stonewall Columbus is a prominent nonprofit that offers a wide range of services, including support groups, counseling, health services, and youth programs. The Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization (BRAVO) is another crucial organization working to combat violence against LGBTQ individuals and provide assistance to survivors.

As Columbus continues to evolve and champion LGBTQ rights, it serves as a reminder to other communities around the world that embracing diversity is not only the right thing to do but also a catalyst for creating a richer, more harmonious society for all.

Enjoy the Journey!

I first visited South Africa six years ago with a group of friends. It was one of the most incredible journeys I had ever been on, and I knew I wanted to return. I fell in love with Cape Town and of course, all the animals we saw while on safari, so when the opportunity came to visit the country again, I knew I couldn’t pass it up.

Cape Town is one of my favorite cities in the world. Words can’t describe how beautiful the city is especially when you venture outside the city center and explore the beautiful scenic overlooks surrounding the Cape of Good Hope offering stunning views of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

I stayed at the Capital 15 on Orange, a modern boutique hotel located just outside of the city center which boasts a grand lobby, a fully equipped fitness center, and a wonderful restaurant. Most hotels in South Africa include breakfast so be sure to research those options before you book. The breakfast buffet at the Capital 15 was one of the best I’ve ever had. It will help you save a bit of money even though at the moment, the exchange rate is quite favorable for American tourists.

My favorite aspect of Capital 15 was the room. I’ve stayed in many hotel rooms over the years, and this one comes close to the top of my list. The room features a king-size bed with luxury linens, an enormous bathroom with a walk-in shower and a separate soaking tub as well as unobstructed views of Table Mountain, one of Cape Town’s most famous landmarks.

Speaking of attractions, the Victoria & Alfred waterfront is a must-see destination. Somehow, I skipped this on my last visit to Cape Town, but I quickly realized why it should be on top of everyone’s list. The area contains dozens of restaurants, shops, and entertainment options and is the perfect place to grab lunch or dinner while gazing out into the harbor.

This is also the launching point of our Cape Town helicopter tour. I had never flown in a helicopter before, so I was a bit nervous, but the team at NAC Helicopters made the process simple and kept us safe while we viewed the city from the sky. For being a travel journalist, I have a strange fear of flying, so being thousands of feet in the air is a bit unnerving, but the views were incredible.

South Africa is known for its incredible wines. If you are looking to visit some vineyards while in Cape Town, Jeep Tours Cape Town offers tours of the Stellenbosch region, just a quick 45 minutes from the city. We had the opportunity to stop by three beautiful vineyards and sample some of their world-class wines including Chenin Blanc and Pinotage, the signature grape of the region. Jeep Tours Cape Town have personal relationships with each vineyard they visit and therefore have access to private spots not available to the public. The woman-owned business can customize trips from a small party to a large group and if you would like to just visit LGBTQ vineyards or those which employ LGBTQ winemakers, they can make that happen as well.

Gay culture is plentiful in Cape Town. Almost everywhere you visit will be welcoming to LGBTQ tourists, but if you are looking to grab a cocktail at LGBTQ-specific spots, try Café Manhattan and Beefcakes, where the servers are shirtless and offer guests the opportunity to take shots off their scantily clad bodies…or so I’ve heard!

The next day we flew out to Port Elizabeth, just a quick one-hour hop from Cape Town, where we were met by our drivers to bring us to Shamwari Game Reserve, a private game reserve that offers multiple 5-star accommodations, an animal rehabilitation center, and a Born Free campus which rescues animals who were used in a circus or purchased for pets. Born Free operates in multiple countries throughout the world including Kenya, Ethiopia, and Australia.

Driving up to our resort on Shamwari was like a scene out of a movie. We passed zebra, and herds of impala and springbok as we cruised along the dirt road. The staff at Long Lee Manor was waiting for us with warm hand towels and refreshing beverages before showing us to our rooms, which came complete with a heated bed for those chilly safari nights as well as an outdoor shower so guests could feel at one with nature.

Monkeys love parading around the property with the intention of stealing food, so we were advised to never leave our doors open otherwise we may come back to stolen merchandise.

Long Lee Manor is comprised of 18 private rooms, a pool and pool house, a spa, and a full-service restaurant. Guests can relax with friends and family while they play board games and stare out into the vast savannah hoping to spot wildlife that frequents the watering hole.

After a quick change into my safari outfit, we headed out for our first game drive in hopes to spot some of the Big 5 – which include elephants, lions, leopards, cape buffalo, and rhinoceros.

Animal sightings are never guaranteed on safari. The reserve we were on was almost 40,000 hectares (100,000 acres), so the chances of spotting wildlife can vary depending on the time of year, weather, migration patterns, and behavior. Our guide Jacques has been a ranger for many years and is able to spot wildlife from what seemed like a mile away. Our first sighting was a few warthogs, then as we turned the corner, we ran into a family of elephants. Seeing these majestic animals in the wild is just awe-inspiring.

Although we kept our distance, we were still about 50 feet away, in striking distance if the animal wanted to charge us. Fortunately, we just sat in our vehicle and watched as the family ate their meal and interacted with each other. Elephants are one of nature’s most intelligent animals and develop feelings and bonds just like humans. Jacques told us a story of how he witnessed a calf being born and the others in the herd started trumpeting and dancing in celebration of the birth.

A few miles further up the road was a mother rhinoceros with her calf. The horn on the mother rhino was probably two feet in length and we were told spotting her with her young was very tricky as they hadn’t been seen in months.

As the sun began to set over Shamwari, we headed back to the resort for a Boma dinner, where we dined on traditional African foods outdoors around a communal fire. The meal consisted of a delicious soup and numerous types of meat. As we broke bread and recanted tales of the day’s activities it was hard not to pinch myself in disbelief. I was on safari for the second time, and it was just as magical as the first. It was a moment I didn’t want to take for granted.

The next morning, we woke up with the birds and began the second game drive of our stay. The mornings tend to be very chilly, and we were advised to dress in layers as the temperature fluctuates throughout the day. The good thing about morning drives is this is when animals are the most active.

About 20 minutes into the drive, we spotted two male lions, a young nomad being chased out of the territory of the elder lion. The young lion ran through the grass knowing he was not welcome. After he no longer viewed the nomad as a threat, the elder lion took a rest as we watched the encounter from about a football field away.

More sightings quickly followed; cape buffalo, springboks, impala, hippopotamus, rhino, and three female lionesses taking a much-needed afternoon rest. They are the hunters of the family so saving their energy is always well-deserved.

As the day drew to a close, the staff at Shamwari had one last surprise for us, a sundowner, which is basically a cocktail reception in the bush. The staff set up a full bar, appetizers, and some chairs around a campfire. We spent the next hour sipping cocktails and watching the sunset over the mountains. Something so small meant so much to all of us and made for an experience we won’t soon forget.

Guests at Shamwari can also opt to visit the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, which helps to rehabilitate and care for sick, injured, abandoned, or orphaned animals. Once these animals have been nursed back to health, they are released back into their natural habitat.

It’s not an interactive visit, but an informative and educational experience, to give animals the best chance at a successful release. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Shamwari is a registered facility and as such, animals in need come from all over the Eastern Cape. The primary goal is to ultimately return all the animals back to the wild once they are healed.

As tired as we all were after our two-week adventure through South Africa, we didn’t want to leave Shamwari. It is a truly majestic place that is well worth the visit. I vowed to return and share these memories with other friends and family.

Enjoy the Journey!
