Key West is to host thousands of women during the annual Womenfest celebration scheduled Wednesday through Sunday, Sept. 4-8. Renowned as one of North America’s largest gatherings of lesbians and their friends, the event is to include festivities on land and sea. They range from spirited daytime pool parties and picturesque sunset dinner sails to late-night dance parties.

Just before the school year starts in earnest just as the last rays of summertime finally set just before the holiday season begins to rev up, Key West welcomes women from across the globe to an annual celebration that has become one of the largest gatherings of lesbians and friends in North America, Womenfest!  Each year thousands of ladies come together over the Labor Day weekend and stay for a wide range of activities and events during four days of revelry and fun. The popular gathering features a warm and welcoming vibe designed to foster the camaraderie of like-minded women, while also showcasing the attractions of the internationally acclaimed lesbian and gay vacation destination.

The action-packed Womenfest schedule launches with an evening gala set for 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Alexander’s Guesthouse, 1118 Fleming St. Scheduled festival highlights include a fundraising contest and show titled “Real Women Do Drag,” women’s flag football clinics and scrimmage, a women-only sunset tea dance and dinner cruise with musical favorites Sister Funk, the intriguingly named Drunken Drag Brunch and the White Party with headliner DJ Citizen Jane.

Among other events is the Brushes N Booze gathering presented by Effusion Gallery/Key West and held at Mangoes Restaurant, 700 Duval St. The party is to feature nationally esteemed artist Chris Hotham displaying her original work, “Pride Sunset.”

Throughout the week, festival attendees can explore Key West’s museums and historic attractions, gardens and tours, galleries, fishing, diving and other watersports excursions.  The celebrations are to conclude Sunday, Sept. 8, when revelers can join Key West’s traditional Tea Dance at 4 p.m. at La Te Da, 1125 Duval St.

Key West boasts restaurants that offer remarkable cuisine year round, watering holes that offer authentic, tropical libations and shops that can’t be found anywhere else. Of course the most popular activity during Womenfest usually involves a chaise lounge, a good book, sunscreen and a killer margarita!
