As an often femme-identified queer woman, I often mix masculine clothing along with feminine pieces. When decked out in super feminine pieces (think floral, pink, frills, lace) I feel as though I am in drag so I choose to ground more ‘girly’ pieces with a leather jacket, motorcycle boots, fun sneakers, multipurpose accessories or heavy metal.

I generally feel more comfortable in more masculine or tomboy clothing, opting to wear men’s clothing more often than women’s. Out of some ingrained need to include more femininity in my look, I have rarely had the proverbial ‘balls’ to go all out with my masculine looks. But today is a new day! The day I have been dreaming of is finally here… the tomboy look has gone mainstream!

From celebrities and high fashion houses to street style and fast fashion stores… tomboy style is everywhere and I could not be more happy! Not only do we no have so many more clothing options at a multitude of price points, we no longer have to settle for ill-fitting clothing or having to tailor men’s pieces to fit our bodies correctly.

If you’re looking for inspiration you don’t have to look very far, chances are your favorite fashion blog is covering tomboy fashion, that actress you adore is sporting tomboy style or that gorgeous model you see in every ad campaign is wearing clothes that look like the were stolen from her brother when she’s off duty.

The fun part about incorporating tomboy style is that there are no distinct rules for how to put your look together… you are free to add as little or as much tomboy as you like.

Check out how UNIF flexes with great unisex pieces like their famous hellraisers and this jersey that ‘goes both ways’ . Wildfang has an entire ‘Tomboy’ collection, their cheeky take on the concept; their other pieces such as this great denim jacket, also mirror the concept. This contrast sleeve bomber and coated dark jeans from Veer NYC are everything. For some more labels doing the androgynous thing oh so well, check out TomboyX, Androgyny, Haute Butch, and Veea.

I smell gay.

… I swear I do. Which is why I am always shocked when I am mistaken for straight. Even if someone misses that distinctive ‘queer’ scent on me, I figure that my outfit will always be the giveaway… but apparently that is not always the case.

Though I do not necessarily categorize myself under any of the typical labels, most of my friends would call me “femme” meaning that I am comfortable in dresses/ skirts and seem more on the ‘girly’ ‘feminine’ side of the spectrum. While I do not completely disagree with this assessment, I would more accurately call myself a boho tomboy. I look to Jimi Hendrix, Patti Smith and those who prefer the nomadic lifestyle for inspiration.

I see the way I choose to dress as very different from what a typical heterosexual woman would wear. Somehow even when I ‘girl it up’ I’m still a little tougher, a little edgier, a little less traditionally feminine. I might wear a super sweet soft flowing dress, but it only looks right if I pair it with combat boots and tonnes of spikes. The newish phenomenon of ‘boyfriend jeans’ is right up my alley because I’ve been wearing men’s jeans… well men’s clothes in general, forever. I understand that I am read as ‘quirky’ or ‘different’ but outside of the LGBTQ community, rarely gay.

Historically LGBTQ people used physical signifiers/ fashion items to be able to identify one another, for example the subtle pinky rings, without ‘outing’ themselves to the heterosexual mainstream. With the growing acceptance of LGBTQ culture these signifiers have become less and less necessary. So the question is now, in the post-rainbow era, what makes a person “look” gay? While, I do recognize that for the most part no clear distinction between straight and non-straight individuals can necessarily be acknowledged, I have observed certain physical attributes or behaviors that have been tip-offs for me (all of which I exhibit myself).

A very specific swagger (in case you’re not familiar with swagger, think of the way that super good looking dude just walked into the room, clearly knowing how good looking he is)

Comfort with wearing items of clothing traditionally associated with the ‘opposite’ sex

Mixing traditionally masculine and feminine items at the same time

Perfectly groomed eyebrows (regardless of gender)

Bandanas in the back jean pocket (aka flagging), to decipher what the color and location of the ‘flag’ means visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handkerchief_code

A great sense of fashion, which others my identify as haute, edgy or quirky

You see them holding hands, kissing, making out with someone of the same gender

I realize that as it is with every rule, there are exceptions to this list. However, this list will definitely help you hone in on developing your gaydar!

Once upon a time I was just a girl with a love/hate relationship with fashion and a dream…

Today, I’m still a girl with a love/ hate relationship with fashion (which I have subsequently been able to recognize as “style”) and a dream… but that dream is so much bigger that what it used to be! The path that this dream has taken me on is not one I could ever have imagined, but I am thankful for every single moment of this crazy ride!

By now you’re probably wondering what exactly it is that I do… other than my title as previous “Hot Artist” writer for PinkPlayMags cum fashion columnist & blogger for the publication. I am also a wardrobe stylist. If you’re anything like I used to be 7 years ago, you’re saying “Okay, I still have no idea what it is you do.”

To put it simply, I dress people. Sometimes those people are celebrities or high profile clients, and sometimes they are just ‘normal people’ like you and me. I put together the outfits for music videos, commercials, films, TV shows, magazines, catalogues and websites. I’ve sat behind Joshua Jackson at Ralph Lauren’s Presentation at New York Fashion Week, dressed the gorgeous girls of 90210 for the Golden Globes and Bollywood Mega-star Prianka Chopra, helped Green Day’s Mike Dirnt look great in front of the camera, dressed actors for Hyundai and Beats By Dre commercials, and explored the expansive closets of the rich and famous. I’ve also been fortunate enough to work with companies like Nasty Gal, Forever 21, Just Fab and Sanctuary Clothing.

By far though, my absolute favorite part of my job is being able to bring my knowledge of fit, color and trend to my private clients who just want to look and feel great on a daily basis; having this one-on-one ongoing relationship with someone in this capacity is absolutely priceless. I hope that we can develop a similar relationship through the Tops & Bottoms column and accompanying blog. I will bring my expansive knowledge to you, along with my observations of what’s going on in the fashion world. Plus, I will be giving you a front row seat to all of the amazing events I attend, starting with the world’s largest Lesbian Circuit Party, Dinah Shore in my next column. You can also look forward to celeb style, fashion dos and don’ts, and of course snippets of me having fun on set!

See you back here real soon!
