It’s been over 40 years since the first case of AIDS was reported in North America. With that being said, we dedicate this PinkPlayMags’ Springplay! 40 Years of HIV/AIDS: Historical PerspectHIVe to the +32 million people around the world who’ve died from AIDS-related illnesses and the +39 million living with HIV/AIDS to this day.
In our first feature, celebrity make-up artist Sandy Linter, who was also the late-supermodel Gia Carangi’s girlfriend, discussed what it was like living and working in NYC when AIDS first struck, and her relationship with Gia who had sadly passed from AIDS due to intravenous drug use in ‘86.
Aaron Rothermund takes us through the History of HIV/AIDS in North America in our second feature; from the moment of the initial widespread panic to highlighting major events and discoveries, the heroic responses, and the progress made since the core-shaking onset.
Our third feature, HIV/AIDS in Film – From Repression to Representation, Bryen Dunn, runs through a condensed list of ground-breaking movies released through the decades documenting the history of the AIDS crisis – grab a few tissue boxes before you sit down to watch them.
In our Travel section there are queer-positive places, events, and businesses in Orlando where it’s ok to say “gay” should you find yourself in that neck of Florida. Theatre collaborators, Nick Green and Andrew Kushnir, are ‘double’ featured in Hot Artist by Sean Bean Beaton. The Roseneath Theatre is a youth-oriented production company you can learn more about in Community Cornerstone. Take a break from spring cleaning to read My Government Means to Kill Me by Rasheed Newson in Fiction.
Who needs a crystal ball? Not you! We’ve got your Spring Horoscopes inside. Take a look at our Spring in the City event listings handpicked by our Events Editor, Sherry Sylvain. From the Heart by our Creative Director, Mychol Scully will urge you to reflect on his shared thoughts – and you won’t even have to give him a penny… err… nickel for them. Plus, we have our Home & Garden Supplement online if you’re looking for guidance, tips, or a boost of inspiration.
