When I work with my clients, not only do we revamp their clothes and put a good looking wardrobe together, I use my training and experience in NLP coaching to get to the root of what’s going on. 

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Think of it this way: 

Neuro =  your mind and your beliefs

Linguistic =  the words we use

Programming = how we are programmed to operate

All of this creates our reality. Our beliefs + our words + our actions = our reality

What I’ve learned through my training and seen evidently in myself and clients is that our beliefs dictate our life’s outcomes. In fact, the ages of 0-7 are considered the imprint years — years in which we are a complete sponge and have no ability to reject the information we receive. Isn’t that wild?

Many of the clients I work with reflect on age-old beliefs about their body image or style that were implanted in them as children. Not being able to wear the colours they wanted, being told they were too big, too small, having their hair fussed over, etc. 

Consciously, we may feel like we’ve moved on from these stories — unconsciously, however, they are running the entire show behind the scenes. This manifests in many ways when it comes to our self image and style:

• Only shopping at certain stores
• Not wearing any colour to remain unseen
• Wearing only colour with fear of being overlooked 
• Wearing baggy clothes because of body shame

Often times, what is more important than going on a shopping spree and grabbing the trendiest finds, is doing the internal work, releasing old internal beliefs and syncing up new ideas, new perspectives and beliefs about your worth, both internally and externally through your style.

The good news is, these old beliefs are actually not so hard to get rid of — the tools of NLP coaching equip practitioners to work with clients to remove them at deeper levels. That is really where the transformation happens! In fact, the best compliments I’ve received, after doing the internal and external work are rarely about just my clothes — it’s my energy or aura, the feeling of being around someone who is in sync.

I challenge those I work with, those who come across my website, or social media to think beyond trying to just be stylish or to go spend hundreds of dollars on new clothes. First, reflect and better understand those thoughts and beliefs running throughout your life. How are they impacting what you wear everyday? 

When you master your mindset, everything really does magically fall into place — now that’s how you have perfect style!

How’s 2024 going? Are you looking for a redo? I’m always happy to have a fresh start, so when I came across a TikTok that said, “The energetic year starts on March 19 during the Spring Equinox” I said let’s turn back the clock!

Since everything is energy, the energetic cosmos strongly influences my wardrobe choices. Coming out of a winter full of blacks and neutrals, I’ve been craving colours and feelings of a fresh start. 

Lacking style inspiration? Look to the earthly patterns and cycles of the sun, the moon and the turns of seasons for direction. Read on for my go at fashion horoscope for the upcoming month…

Your Cosmic Couture guide:

The Spring Equinox on March 19 marked a time of renewal and rejuvenation. A chance to start fresh, leaving any letdowns of the last 3 months of 2024 go. Our spirits tend to feel lifted and our fashion sense gets the chance to awaken from winter slumber. Though the equinox itself has passed, the vibes are still stronger than ever.

Consider embracing: 

• Airy fabrics – linens and light-feeling clothes
• Flowy silhouettes, boho chic and light colours
• Playful floral patterns, fun skirts and shirts

The eclipse on everyone’s lips is coming up on April 8. The moon will pass between earth and the Sun, obscuring the view of the sun on earth, and turning things dark for a few moments during the day. Eclipses are cosmic wild cards that shake things up and push us out of our comfort zones energetically. So what are you wearing for the eclipse? Here’s some moody suggestions:

• Oversized denim jacket paired with earthy tones
• Sheer/lace shirt or leggings layered with a graphic tee or skirt

Finally, the Pink Moon on April 16 couldn’t come at a better time as Nicki Minaj brings her Pink Friday 2 Tour to Toronto for the first night on April 18. While you can catch me at the concert with my loudest pink prints on, this Pink Moon radiates a sense of joy and optimism, perfect to infuse your wardrobe with playful nods of colour. So on top of pink… look out for:

• Sky blue
• Matched with simple prints and bold accessories for a fun and carefree look

Fashion is so versatile and can be influenced by many factors. For me, it’s deeply connected to my mood and so when I leaned into dressing based on what the earth was naturally doing, I started to have a lot of fun with it.

Whether you’re dancing under the stars, embracing the transformative energy of an eclipse, or basking in the optimism of the Pink Moon, remember to let your style reflect the magic of all you truly are. Nicki graced the cover of American Vogue last month — looking subdued and elegant, yet conveying power, accomplishment and drive.

If you study it closely, there are many fashion takeaways we can implement in our everyday lives.

When you think of Nicki Minaj, some words that might come to mind are “pink wigs”, “eccentric style”, “big butt”, and “animated” — the words synonymous with her mainstream impact on music and fashion. 

What is pictured on the Vogue cover though, is far from that. It’s the real Nicki — subdued, natural, simple styling that is breathtaking, classy and ethereal. A photo fit for her cover story diving not only into the many accolades of her career that span wider than just the pink wigs, also the transition into motherhood. 

She graces the cover with confidence — her core fans know that this is the real Nicki, the Nicki that doesn’t need all the animation and funky fashion choices. She has always been very open and vulnerable with her fans, this cover highlighting that intimacy.

Now, not all of us are gracing the cover of magazines, let along Vogue. However, at the top of 2024 you might be:

• In need of new headshots
• Are rebranding your dating app profile
• Updating your website content
• Need to be more present on social media
• Are about to interview for new jobs or
• Are ready to show up looking more confident

The key to being iconic is that you don’t need much more than just who you are. An outfit is meant to perfectly compliment your personality and vibe. In these high-stakes scenarios listed above, the best thing you can do is to lead with your aura. That is… your smile, the look in your eyes — it’s all energy it’s palpable. These days we are looking for authenticity from corporations, brands, politicians, celebrities — rather than that, right here, we’re going to bring authenticity Back in the Closet. As an Iconic Visibility Activator, I elevate creatives to own their inner icon by stepping into their most authentic expression by de-conditioning identity to unveil their true style. 

From a young age we’re taught how to do everything. How to crawl, walk, speak, act, behave — how to be. The ages 0 to 7 are known as the imprint years, and during that time we’re a sponge — we soak in just about everything from our surroundings. The good and the bad. They become apart of our beliefs, values and behaviours for the rest of our lives. Unless we do some deep work to undo them.

In the same ways we’re taught our fashion boundaries: the dos and don’ts, the casual and dressy, the masculine and the feminine. It’s not until we hit the rebellious teenage years or later on where we might break down these moulds, forging our own unique style. Growing up, I remember admiring my mom’s fancy shoes and purses, wondering why it was only that women could have pretty things.

Many of the clients I work with are still stuck in the fashion box they were put in as a child. “I can’t wear glitter, I need to be in black,” “I can’t wear a clutch, it’s too feminine,” “I need my loud patterns, otherwise, how else will I be seen?” 

To be authentic means to understand who you are — to know it, to love it, and to then show it off. I’ve learned that I like pretty things. That is a part of who I am. I express that through my accessories, statement pieces, or paying extra special attention to detail when doing my hair or skincare.

Let’s take a bet on our own true style. Being by asking, “do I dress for myself or for others?”

When you start to wear clothes that you actually love, you become 100x more magnetic, talk about authentic! Imagine your perfect closet, what would it be full of?

• Colour and patterns?
• Muted, sophisticated looks? 
• Pastels and coastal vibes? 
• Casual and comfy?

Now think about your wardrobe, how much of it currently is what you just imagined? 

Authentic means, “of undisputed origin; genuine.” You are your own unique being, don’t let the world tell you what you should be. A perfect way to express this is to begin with your clothes. The next time you’re shopping or you’re Back in the Closet, choose what you love.

When done right, fashion is our ultimate communicator, it tells everyone about your vibe and your values — you want those to be authentic, right?

Do you ever feel like you are living life as an undercover, yet-to-be-discovered celebrity? Same! Those of us in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community are all icons. We have this aura, complete with an extra sparkle that makes us magnetic to others. For many, we’ve had to claim our identity, perhaps even defend it. How powerful is that? 

In this issue of Back In The Closet, we’re prepping for our celebrity moment. Here are tips to make everyday your runway day — to feel the million dollar star that you already are.

1. Reds:

Speaking of red carpets… Red is here in a big way — Fall 2023 said muted colours… OUT. Red, IN. Red can be a unique one to wear but nothing shouts confidence more than a red outfit. With holiday season around the corner, don’t be afraid to outshine the rest — here are a few red pieces that you can have your moment in:

2. The right fit > trends 

To be most confident, sometimes going with your “safe” option or the right fit is more beneficial than chasing trends. There is nothing more iconic than celebrating your body type and dressing for it. I spent some time in Italy this month and I came back with a renewed sense of fashion. Here in North America, we’re always chasing a new trend. For example, right now super wide legged pants are in. Now… you wouldn’t catch an Italian wearing anything that ill-fitting! 

At times it can be best to ditch the trends and know what flatters your body shape the most. With my frame, super wide pants drown me out, so I stick to a straight-cut pant to boost my confidence in my look.

3. Have an all-black pair of shades 

There is nothing more stealthy than a black on black outfit to run errands in — what completes the look is a pair of black sunglasses for your, “hiding from the paparazzi” moment as you walk into Loblaws.

4. Ditch the need to hide

Celebrities have a certain way of carrying themselves — the gateway to their stardom that is important for icons like us to pay attention to. It’s not to say it doesn’t come with constant upleveling and work. As a person preparing for their inevitable celebrity status… I knew I had to take myself seriously! I went on to do my own transformational work to ensure my inner authenticity matched my exterior image. 

Perhaps the most iconic thing you can do is allow yourself the opportunity to be seen. Apply for a new job, start sharing information about your business more on social media, or get back into the dating scene. Doing things that “feel cringy” get us closer to our goals, 

Doing the inner work allows you to use fashion as your communicator and to elevate that inner icon.

So this Fall and as we head into the holiday season, don’t be afraid to stand out, treat every day like you have the paparazzi and tons of fans waiting on you. It’s a simple mindset shift that will have you glowing even more, inside and out.

For those of us in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, we have spent a lot of time coming out of the closet. A space that can represent shame, confusion, and unnerving feelings about what to do next. So I applaud you for coming out of the closet… but today, we’re going back in!

Research shows that first impressions are made within 7 seconds. What are the most controllable and changeable aspects of that first impression? Clothes! The items that most of (the time) we choose to cover our bodies with. These few seconds are just enough for someone to do a quick eye scan up and down and make their judgement. 

Imagine that the next time you step out of the house you meet the love of your life (if so, jealous), your next employer or business partner, or an unpredictable friendship sparks in line at the grocery store. Because, diva, the second we leave the house we are a walking billboard.

So how do you like to present yourself? Sophisticated and chic, trendy and edgy, natural and effortless? Your clothes tell your whole story, whether you intend they do or not. Are you stuck in the same style from a different decade, or dare I say millennium? You’re not alone — I’ve been there too.

I single-handedly kept the Guess store in business while in high school and university. While that look was wild and “so me” at that moment, my style and self have evolved much since then. But trust me, style doesn’t have to be complicated. With some guidance and even a shred of a love for fashion, you can rock any outfit and feel fabulous.

Those of us in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community are survivors. No matter how simple or difficult coming out was, you survived! Even after coming out, we know how to hide our demons really well. Like, so well that they’re tucked so far back in our closets. We think we are hiding them well, but they show up in how we dress, and how we express ourselves to the world. Our worn-out sneakers, jeans that don’t fit just right anymore, or all-black outfits can all be mechanisms of hiding.

So the next time you blame your clothes for not being as glamorous as you’d like… what are you even saying to yourself in the mirror? How kind are the words you utter to yourself under your breath? Fashion is more than just a superficial interest — it’s a way to transform how we feel on the inside. Trust me, I went from shy and insecure, to confidently rocking stages partly because I owned my look!

Here’s the thing: your mindset is like the foundation of a stylish outfit. When it’s strong and aligned with who you truly are, your confidence becomes unstoppable. Your relationships flourish, your career path becomes clearer, and you embrace life with an authentic sense of purpose.

Don’t overthink it. Get rid of anything that you haven’t worn in 6 months, or anything you haven’t worn during its appropriate season. I’m serious. Thinning out your selection will make it easier to make a decision. Have a hot date? Great, rummage through 10 dresses instead of 30, 6 pairs of perfectly fitting jeans instead of 20 that are mostly worn out. 

Decluttering your space will do wonders for your mind.
