So here we are, yet again. Brush of your beads, find your rainbow knee-high socks, and maybe purchase a tutu – folks, it is Pride month! This is not an easy year to celebrate due to recent events targeting the LGBT community, however the show will go on.

As we happily drink our weight in watered-down hi-balls while cheering on our favourite airline’s ‘inclusive’ float, we may want to take a quick glance at the Dollar Store poster board and hockey stick signs that declare such slogans as ‘Real Women Have a Vagina’, ‘We Stand With Queers in Palestine’, or ‘Men Have Rights Too’. My guess is that most of us don’t pay too much attention to the entirety of these statements. Perhaps if we did, the mundane familiarity of airline floats would be squashed under the real reason why Pride is still valid and necessary.

In 2010 Pride Toronto ran into some trouble that still leaves its traces even now. Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA), a Toronto-based organization that sought to eliminate what they (and many others) deemed Israeli Apartheid, was initially banned from the parade that year because of the use of the phrase ‘Israeli Apartheid’. After much pressure, Pride Toronto reversed its decision and QuAIA marched, only to be questioned year after year by City Officials, politicians, and in fear of losing city funding, Pride Toronto.

Veteran lesbian activist Miriam Ben-Shalom was recently stripped of her Grand Marshal status with Milwaukee Pride due to her stance on transgender women. She is very vocal about her transphobia, spewing out her hatred of trans women using the woman’s washroom. In her response to the revoking of her Grand Marshal status, Ben-Shalom stated in a lengthy letter to the Milwaukee Pride board, “For your information, I am indeed a PERF–penis exclusionary radical feminist who believes that women born of women have the right to safe spaces of their own, and cultural events they put on for themselves and those sisters who might like to attend. After all, men have had a long history of male only spaces in the LGBT community and not much ado was made of it.”

Last year, Vancouver Pride made a precedence by disallowing the B.C. Liberals to march in the pride parade. The Liberals declined the signing of a pledge created by Vancouver Pride that expand human rights protection to transgender and gender variant folks, and unfortunately for them, Vancouver Pride required this signing in order to march.

According to Laura Miller, who was executive director of the B.C. Liberals at the time, they did not sign the pledge because, “It’s not a human rights issue, because transgender and gender-variant people are equal and they are covered under the B.C. human rights code.”

Chrissy Taylor, Vice President of Vancouver Pride disagreed with Miller’s stance. “Folks who aren’t within the binary of male or female or identity as trans are not covered under the human rights code, and can’t explicitly file claims on behalf of discriminate (based on) gender identity. It’s not there so they aren’t covered.”

These three examples are simply that – a very small example of the little things that we may have missed in the menagerie of beads, beats, and balloons. No matter how commercial Pride has become, underneath all of the glitz, glamour, and ‘gay-friendliness’ lies the underpinnings and political upheaval that existed in June of 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan.

I think that perhaps this year, of all recent years, paying attention to the finer details in your local Pride Parade is imperative. Sure, having a larger blow-up jet cascading down the street with rainbow wings and a Cher soundtrack, or the most glittery float carrying our favourite news team down the parade route is fun – but it isn’t real. These folks aren’t paving the way for full equality and the right to safety in our own spaces.

Our fight may not be 1969, but it is 2016. We are fighting in our small ways while attempting to survive and thrive in this world of hours.

When Pip, badly beaten and left for dead, enters Forsyth Turn’s world, all things Forsyth knows as true are no longer. This tale of both fantasy and reality synthesizes together in a narrative about an unlikely hero, and his quest to be more than a ‘secondary character’.

J.M. Frey, a Canadian award-winning science fiction and fantasy writer has uniquely turned upside-down the concept of the misogynistic and unbent fantasy world that is so common in the contemporary Sci-Fi/Fantasy genres. Instead, she introduces us to a kick-ass and quirky feminist warrior, brought into Turn’s world with a stranger-than-fiction platform.

Similarly to the ground-breaking novel Sophie’s World by Norwegian author Jostein Gaarder, the reader is left unsure of what is real in a macrocosm of old-world lore, and philosophical perplexity. Directed by a celestial entity known as the Writer, we come to realize that the unsure, and hard-on-himself Forsyth lives in a world that is in fact, a series of novels. Furthermore, Pip is a Reader mysteriously dropped into this unforgiving narrative, with a desire to simply go home.

This story is nothing short of fun, unexpected, and a little bit queer. If your interested in a Science Fiction/Fantasy undertaking with all of the ingredients of a queer anthology, The Untold Tale is for you.

Available through J.M. Frey’s website, Amazon, and good book stores near you.

Unless you have been living under a rock, or you are one of those who ‘just don’t care’, election season is upon us. For most of us in the queer community, the decision is easy – anything but Harper. And for those that will vote to continue the Harper regime, I will remind you of this beauty:

Here in Alberta, the political arena has sprung into a leftist-cesspool of confusion. Our Premier is none other than a female NDP’er, Calgary’s Mayor is a single Muslim in his 40’s, and there are more openly gay MP’s than can be counted on one hand. To many old school conservatives that consider Harper to be as progressive as Obama, Alberta is turning into Switzerland. With this leftist progression comes a right-wing backlash. This backlash can take many forms, and sadly it has turned on to one of our most valued sectors of the queer community.

Joan Crockatt is a Conservative Member of Parliament and represents Calgary Centre. Her focus is on gender and politics and claims to be an advocate in ensuring female representation. She made headlines last year by being one of the sole Conservative marchers in the Calgary Pride Parade. Her reception in the parade was met with some dissonance, and very little cheering, but was taken with a grain of salt.

This year, Ms. Crockatt decided to take another shot at marching – no harm, no foul. Luckily for us, someone did their research on the Conservative Joan Crockatt, and her confident participation in our Pride Parade was no longer welcome.

You see, back when Bill C-279 (a piece of legislation seeking to elevate transgender rights by adding gender identity provisions to the Criminal Code and the Canadian Human Rights Act) sought votes from members of parliament, Crockatt voted against it.

When this savvy researcher unearthed this non-vote for trans* rights, they went straight to social media. The mainstream media caught wind of the issue, and both Pride Calgary and Crockatt were put in the hot seat.

When questioned for her non-vote, Crockatt spoke with confidence that a no-vote was actually a vote for trans* rights. Confused yet? So was the Calgary community. Apparently, after consultation with EGALE, Crockatt decided to vote ‘no’ to the Bill because it did not do enough to protect the trans* community. This was also the excuse she gave Pride Calgary, allowing them to say ‘yes’ to her parade entry.

When EGALE was contacted in regards to this ‘consultation’ this was their response:

“Egale would never endorse or encourage or tacitly approve of a vote against C-279, in the form passed by the House of Commons. To use consultation with us as an explanation of their vote against Bill would be a complete misrepresentation.”

Caught up in her own lies, Crockatt dropped out of the Pride Parade.

People like Joan Crockatt are starting to infiltrate the queer community with good reason – they know the power that we hold. They know that we know who they are. People like Joan Crockatt will do what they can to show ‘diversity’ and ‘acceptance’ because they know that our vote matters.

What people like Joan Crockatt haven’t counted on is the fact that we no longer accept ‘tolerance’. We want action, and this incident with Pride Calgary only proves that point.

Recently, history was made as the Conservative Capital of Canada became the Progressive Paramount of Harper’s regime. Rachel Notley, NDP Leader and NDP Royalty made global headlines by wiping out the Progressive Conservative’s 44 year reign in the Wild Rose Province by becoming Premier. Along with her win, PC MLA’s were evicted in quick succession, making room for a majority of under the age of 40 governmental rookies compromised of 47% women, and at least four LGBT-identified individuals.

Once Notley was declared Premier-incumbent, Conservative party leader Jim Prentice resigned, theories of post-apocalyptic warfare surfaced, warning Albertans of complete provincial collapse.

One month later, Notley has been sworn in, Jim Prentice is officially MIA, and feminine hygiene products are tax-free. For some, this could be considered the sign of End of Days, but for the rest of us, business goes on as usual with maybe a little more hope.

As a feminist, having a female provincial leader is marvelous. Of course, being a woman does not just make one a fabulous politician. It is also a mix of passion, humility, and global awareness that constitutes a superb leader in my opinion.

There is of course some poor history with female Albertan leaders in the past. As a female coworker said to me after the election, “I don’t know, we haven’t done well with female politicians,” and rather than sitting her down and reciting to her anything by bell hooks, I thought about that sentiment.

Premier Alison Redford came into the scene, guns ablaze, with promises of a new Conservative Party. She even graced the Calgary Pride Parade as Grand Marshal with a motivating, queer loving speech on equality, and the new all-loving regime. I was Pride Calgary President at the time and even presented Redford with our coveted (and expensive) Pride Calgary hoodie.

Huffington Post

Alas, all was not forgiven for Redford as her overspending habit caught up with her, leading to her resignation in 2012. Of course, we all know that overspending is not anything new in the dynamic world of politics, however her habit was of particular significance. There is a popular rumour here in the Wild Rose province that Redford was a little too left and a little too female for the good ol’ boys in the Progressive Conservative monopoly. Her overspending was a convenient excuse to push her out the door. It worked, and Premier Redford became Enemy #1. She now spends her days at a Calgary Starbucks near my work, sipping lattes and chatting with friends. Her hair is cropped and her Doc Marten boots are always shined. She reminds me of a conservative Tank Girl.

After Redford there has been a who’s who of Albertan duds running the province. There were resignations and reelections. We lost track of who was running the province, and quite honestly the hope for a voice for all (or at least the 90% of us) was dead.

Low and behold, an election was called. The names were the same except for one glaring difference. Rachel Notley. Rachel Notley and her troupe of glorious misfits running as MLA’s. They were a group of folks from all walks of life. There were students, out-LGBTQ folks, visible minorities, and women. That’s right folks, for the first time in, well I think the first time, women outnumbered men in the NDP MLA race. Either men just didn’t want to run this time, or the NDP actually believed in progression.

Ironically, the NDP’s won, and they won big. The reason I say ironic is because, well let’s face it, this is Alberta. I also say ironic because as soon as the election winners were called, the s*** hit the fan. How could this happen? How are a bunch of amateurs going to run the province? What about the oil sands? And the list goes on. Considering the fact that the NDP took the province over in a landslide, most of these complainers were actually NDP voters. This is where the confusion lay. Maybe that is just Alberta.

Regardless of the supposed mass hysteria the NDP have caused in their political awesomeness, one thing is clear. There is hope for this province aplenty. There is hope for this Wild Rose, Stampede-centric, oil loving treasure in the west. There is hope for people like me, a feminist queer that really wishes the Stampede would go away, and that we could all just drive Hybrid’s.

Last night I volunteered for a really fabulous queer event here in Calgary. When you think of Calgary, you may not think ‘Canadian queer central’, and compared to cities like Vancouver and Toronto it isn’t. What it does have that I find many larger cities lack, is a sense of cohesiveness and camaraderie that seems to get lost as communities get larger, and ‘tolerance’ by our heterosexual counterparts becomes more apparent. Calgary is at a pinnacle of capaciousness as the city is becoming more mainstream, and the sense of ‘queer community’ is on the verge of liquefying.

This event I was at, Apollo Friends in Sport, Western Cup, is one of our biggest queer events all year, next to Pride, and was a genuine success. One thing struck me though, the ratio of male identified folks compared to female was immensely skewed. In fact, my friends and I joked that we were the only four women in the place. One friend refused to dance because she kept getting pushed around by the conflux of well-dressed and well-cologned gentleman dancing to DJ Mimi Imfurst. I have been to one of these events before and from what I can recall, the ratio has been the same. I find myself wondering why I never noticed before. Or more concerning, maybe I did notice, but just accepted as fate.

Pride Parade

So what had changed, and why was it so apparent to me last night that the lack of women in that particular space? Was it because that space was not a space we were particularly welcome in?

For a short time between 2012 and 2014, I lived in Toronto. As soon as I arrived I immediately looked on the Pride Toronto website to see what opportunities were available as I had a long history with Pride Calgary and wanted to continue to be involved with Pride in any capacity. To my surprise, the Dyke March was advertised as looking for a Team Lead. What surprised me more, was the fact that Pride Toronto was in charge of the Dyke March.

The Toronto Dyke March 2014.

The Dyke March is generally not part of any Pride organization for a reason. The first Dyke March was created to increase visibility of dyke identified folks including bisexual, lesbian, and transfolks. Of course the Pride Parade attracts a large crowd representing the diversity of our community, but is this really the case? Not so much. The Pride Parade, at least in large North American cities has turned into nothing more than a corporate mecca targeting the gay man. We are inundated with visions of flaming mascots like ‘Trojan Man’ and the ever multiplying ‘TD Boys’. These corporations are baiting you for your money, and they are now the norm at each Pride Parade, queer event, and ad campaign.

Trojan Men

TD Boys

So again, I repeat, the Dyke March is generally in direct opposition to the Pride Parade because we are simply not included in the contemporary Pride Movement. So when I became part of the Toronto Dyke March, I quickly learned that the Dyke March serves a purpose that is in direct opposition to a large Pride festival.

Take Back the Dyke Toronto 2010

While my team consisted of some kick ass Dyke activists, our mandate belonged to Pride Toronto. We were financially controlled by them and their sponsors. We were told when our march began and when it ended. Every single decision we made as a team of dykes had to be okay’ed by the entity known as Pride Toronto. Pride Toronto, of course, was doing their job. They were operating as a large, corporately contained event management organization with a queer focus. These were, and still are, a group of fine people doing a fantastic job. I mean last year alone, World Pride welcomed millions of visitors. Pride Toronto knew no better. The event I attended last night knew no better.

So why are these organizations and event planners missing the mark when it comes to reaching the masses, meaning everyone else that isn’t a gay guy?

The problem is systemic sexism. This isn’t a general queer problem. This is a world problem that unfortunately reflects in our community just as much as any other. The gay white male wins the race. The gay white male has the money and therefore has the power to control almost everything, like Pride Toronto and like the event I went to last night. There is no room for us because the gay white male does not understand that it needs to be created. Instead the lack of our presence is chalked up to catchy phrases such as “lesbians don’t go out” or “there aren’t really any trans people in the city”. Both of these statements of course are completely false, but sadly they are commonly spoken.

So, before you decide to chalk up the lack of our attendance on ‘woman issues’ or ‘trans issues’ perhaps take some things into account. We do not make as much money as you. In fact trans women of colour make way less money than we will ever make. They also face much more violence. Is your event a safe one? Does it cost more than I make in a day? We also make up the greater percentage of caregivers. Did you give us enough time to find a babysitter or did you plan your event a couple of days ago? Again, after paying a babysitter can I afford your event? Do any of your organizers identify any differently than as a gay white male? If there are a couple of these folks do you give them the space to contribute? Do you really listen to what they have to say, and give them a safe space to do so? If you don’t have any of these people as part of your team, why not? Have you actively searched for a few good, diverse folks to balance you out?

These are just a few examples of checking yourselves out. What is apparent is that the bulk of us are not included in your events. We simply aren’t given the space to become a part of it, and at this point in the game I can imagine it would be easy to write us off because without us you are doing just fine. Well I would like to argue that you are actually doing a horrible job at being a good queer. We as a community are doing so many great things in the fight for human rights, but we still suck at gender acceptance and equality. You as queer organizers need to step back and check your privilege. You need to reach out to those that aren’t included and do something about it. If we don’t, then we are just like everyone else.

So, my Facebook page doesn’t see a lot of action from others, only posts from yours truly, usually proudly proclaiming my love of my new found singlehood, or perhaps showcasing the talents of any writer on Autostraddle.com. Well, to my astonishment (and perhaps deepest desire), posting an article on Men’s Rights Organization CAFE’s latest billboard extravaganza, with my caption ‘Thoughts?’ created more likes and comments and debates than my page has ever seen.

Before i divulge into the feedback I received on my Facebook page, as well as some interesting CAFE facts, I need to disclose some facts. Most of these responses were from cisgender white folks who were equal parts male and female. I say this because, regardless of the fact that the arguments were relevant, to have only this demographic, leaves out a large portion of folks who are affected by domestic violence, and without this input we only scrape a tiny portion off of the problems, we as a society face.

CAFE recently decided to post an elephantine billboard on the corner of Davenport and Avenue in Toronto with the proclamation, “Half of domestic violence victims are men,” and that “There are no domestic violence shelters dedicated to us.” Displayed alongside the message of the Men’s Right’s rhetoric is a picture of a white woman, closely resembling Linda Blair in the Exorcist, as Leah McLaren of the Globe and Mail puts it, screeching something to the poor white man, who has to plug his ears in protest.

A self-proclaimed group “committed to achieving equality for all Canadians,” CAFE has had its fair share of controversies. In March of 2014, they were granted charitable status by the Canada Revenue Agency, however lied about having Egale Canada, Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund, and the Status of Women Canada as potential participants in future events and panels organized by CAFE. The WorldPride 2014 committee in Toronto revoked CAFE’s permit to march in the Pride Parade due to concern that the group would not align with the values of Pride Toronto. Despite this fact, CAFE marched in the parade alongside the Sherbourne Health Centre, arriving the morning of the parade in CAFE t-shirts. Sherbourne asked them to wear Sherbourne t-shirts, which they did, however passed out CAFE paraphernalia to the audience. When asked about this, Sherbourne stated that they were not aware of this, and if known, would have asked them not to walk with them.

In 2012, CAFE organized an event with keynote speaker, and a leader of the modern Men’s Movement, Warren Farrell, author of such works as The Myth of Male Power, Why Men Earn More, and my personal favorite, Does Feminism Discriminate Against Men? at the University of Toronto. This was met with protests organized by the University of Toronto’s Student Union. Some of the female protesters were subject to online harassment on register-her.com, a repugnant website run by American Men’s Rights Group, A Voice for Men. Some fine work from a flock of fear-mongering, emasculated folks questing for ‘equality among all Canadians.’

Vice.com

As stated, my Facebook page was aflutter with action when this article was posted right after the absolutely adorbs video of animals seeing the outdoors for the first time. Some comments were expected, “False stats. They’re lying,” and “Half is a bold claim.” Some from concerned parents were correct in their concern, “As a woman with two sons…..if any of us experienced any kind of violence I would hope that we would have a safe haven and respect shown to us…..regardless of gender.” Others spoke from the concern of men, “My point behind all of this is, we don’t have enough support for men in any negative situation, addiction, abuse, or otherwise. I’m very thankful that women get as much support as they do, but I acknowledge that more could be done.”

There was also some concern about abuse in general, “Domestic violence needs to be addressed with all sex’s in any campaign bringing about information, which then leads to discussion about this topic, is a win/win for all,” and “The numbers are very real. Gender aside, abuse is abuse – physical, emotional, financial – and it hurts individuals and society at large. I am a man and I have suffered abuse at the sign of men, and women. Some people aren’t given the words to express their frustration. I am also lucky to know that I don’t thrive in a relationship like that. Many people out there however cannot leave their abuser, or do not feel they have the power to change the situation.”

As a feminist and a woman, I of course have an opinion. It is very difficult to keep my imminent and intense rage at another Men’s Rights Group telling me as a feminist that I am the root of all of their ailments and inadequacies when in fact I know damn well that patriarchy is the cause, not me. This is the thing, violence is not an issue solely allocated to women. It happens EVERYWHERE and excludes no one and I will never dispute that. What I absolutely detest is the fact that these groups such as CAFE that have degraded women over and over again, and were created right around the time feminism really started making a difference and continue to claim to fight for equality yet instill such a hatred towards women’s rights that they will do nothing short of attempting to strip any essential service we rightly deserve.Yes, the system is skewed, and yes domestic abuse is far from solved. Abuse and the power structures that surround are a direct result of patriarchy which was created by very powerful white men. This is what CAFE should be angry at, not the women struggling to live on an equal footing as men.

I was recently perusing through my Facebook feed and I came across this article, No Excuses: Why women need to step up. It is, of course, nothing new to read pieces that tell women why they just simply need to buck up and suck it up when attempting to attain equality, but in lieu of recent allegations of sexism in the City Hall offices of Toronto and Calgary I decided to take a closer look at these words of wisdom from writer Scott Gilmore.

“The recent elections in the United States and Canada prove, once again, that there are not enough women in politics. And while systemic sexism doesn’t help, women themselves must shoulder part of the blame,” says Gilmore. He continues, “The surest way to improve the quality of the political talent pool is tap into the 50 per cent of our population who have traditionally been excluded.” This master plan is simple according to Gilman. because our excuses for not jumping into the piranha tank of white male privilege we call politics are simply not good enough.

In Calgary City Hall, the political haven of the one and only World Mayor Naheed Nenshi, accusations of sexism, drug use, and alcoholism have made national headlines. According to Calgary Counsellor Druh Farrell there has been systemic sexism going on in Wild Rose Country for years. “I’ve had meetings where there has been a party in the office and it’s disrupted my meetings. When I’ve complained I’ve been told I don’t need to attend. If you look at why there are fewer women on council maybe that can explain part of it, the approach and tone within this building.”

We all know the sexist, racist, and homophobic ramblings of ex-Mayor Rob Ford, but when the race for his successor last year got really ugly. the old favorite attacks reared their ugly heads. Olivia Chow got the brunt of the disgusting characteristics many politicians and Canadians still hold dear to their heart. A self-proclaimed Ford supporter told Chow at a Mayoral debate to “go home, back to China.” Well known and out councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam was told, amongst other things “I hope you get AIDS and die in public office.”

According to Sheryl Sandberg, author of Lean In: Women, Work, and The Will to Lead women need to jump into the male sphere in whatever way possible. “If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat! Just get on,” Similar to Scott Gilmore, the onus to eliminate sexism in the workplace is put upon the women to accomplish. In other words, we as women should just accept the bullying we receive as common place, and just be thankful for our spot in the system. Well, this isn’t good enough.

In order to fully eliminate sexism in politics, and for any workplace for that matter, systemic sexism needs to be eliminated. This can’t be done by just ‘letting us in’, because you are basically telling us to sit down and shut up. Why should we just jump in as both Gilmore and Sandberg want us to, if it only results in badgering, bullying, and brutality? There has to be a better reason.

So, in response to Scott Gilmore, I say this. You are correct, politics will indeed get better once women play a stronger role in the system. The problem however, lies not in our ability to sign up, but with the fact that politics still doesn’t want us. So before you tell us what we should do, and how we should do it. perhaps you should ask us why we don’t play in the political shark tank instead.

Hello, and welcome to my blog! I am the newest contributor to PinkPlaysMags and am super excited to contribute my general ramblings on all things feminism.

Tonight, as I honour my three year tradition of skimming through Facebook instead of falling asleep at a decent hour, I click on the headline “Kylie Jenner Boob Job: Confirmed by Plastic Surgeon.” As to why I didn’t immediately shut my computer and yell “STOP POLICING WOMEN’S BODIES!” instead of reading the article about an 18 year old socialite, my only answer has to be, “I forgot that I was a feminist.”

“When feminism falls short of our expectations, we decide the problem is with feminism rather than with the flawed people who act in the name of the movement.” ~Roxane Gay, Bad Feminist.

There is a lot of complacency in the contemporary world. Little children are starving in our own neighbourhoods, yet North America’s obesity rate is at an all time high. Our Prime Minister scoffs at the idea of putting the case of Canada’s missing and murdered indigenous women as a top priority, yet we continue to elect folks like him into government. Headlines continually read, “Jessica Simpson’s Slim Down Secrets” and “Stars Without Makeup”, yet we continue to purchase these magazines.

Complacency is easy: it doesn’t ruffle feathers. As I was reading the article on Kylie Jenner, I too was being complacent. I, a rampant and proud feminist, was engaging in the critique of a woman’s body. Sometimes feminists do messed up things, but it doesn’t mean that we aren’t feminists.

“In truth, feminism is flawed because it is a movement powered by people and people are inherently flawed.” ~ Roxane Gay Bad Feminist.

Beyoncé Feminist

There are some really great movements out there promoting the fact that feminism is, in fact, still relevant and active. Beyoncé has stated time and time again that she is a proud feminist, Emma Watson has bravely stood in front of the mainly priviledged Bureaucracy we call the UN to create the #heforshe campaign, and Malala Yousafza, and the age of 17, continues to fight for female education in her native Pakistan regardless of the fact that she was shot three times because of it. Some of these examples have had many critiques and have been flawed in many ways, but as Roxane Gay states “people are inherently flawed.”

So, when the current backlash against feminism, namely the movement ‘Women Against Feminism’ decides that feminism is in fact not needed and vicious, I would argue that these women simply are to complacent to call themselves the f-word because of how dirty the word has become.

Women Against Feminism has a very popular, Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr page full of photos of women with signs explaining why they do not need feminism. Some of my favorites include slogans like “I don’t need feminism, I just need human rights”, “I don’t need feminism because I can speak for myself,” or “I don’t need feminism because I enjoy being feminine.”

Women Against Feminism Tumblr

To the average feminist, these statements seem quite, well feminist!

The actual word, feminism, can be broken down quite simply. Equality for women. It has been broken down even further, and has taken on many intersectionalities, and rightly so. White, straight, cis, able-bodied women would probably have far different concerns and inequalities than a disabled, queer, trans, woman of colour. Regardless, the bottom line is feminism seeks equality for women. Period.

When members of Women Against Feminism claim that they only seek human rights and really want to maintain their femininity, this is what feminism wants for them. There is no rule as to what a feminist looks like, or what kind of rights they are fighting for. The point of equality is that you are treated the same and given the same rights for who you are, not for what is or isn’t considered ‘normal’.

Feminism is considered a dirty word for many. When I say I am a feminist I get glares, and stares, and sneers and jeers – almost always. I will admit that I generally assess the situation before I even come out as a feminist. I feel a little more at ease by declaring my queerness to the public. It is funny how the term for equality for women is becoming more unacceptable than the term for queerness.

When did feminism become dirty? Well this is an entire other blog post, but to sum it up, the right wing (and some of the left)are afraid of equality for women. Women shake things up, and women have proven time and time again to change the world for good. This shift has created the backlash that we see now. Feminism has been described by the right as a man-hating, bra burning, anti-feminine movement to scare away those that may want to join the cause, mainly folks like the Women Against Feminism. And folks, this description could be further from the truth.

Sure there are feminists that have such extreme views that most feminists disagree with them. But, have we not learned that the actions of a few do not represent the majority? Feminists are not perfect, but are generally judged as if we claim to be.

Take it from this proud feminist. I dislike my own body, have never burnt a bra, wear makeup, and have even considered at one point to have children. We are not foolproof. We are simply demanding equality for ourselves. We are feminists. Now excuse me as I return to the latest episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
